We are working hard on delivering a sustainable festival, working closely with sustainability specialists within the creative industries. As part of our commitment to reduce our environmental impact we will seek approved certification with the leading mark of achievement on environmental sustainability within the creative industries. We have outlined our approach to sustainability for our first Secret Sessions Festival in the information below.
Car sharing is a fun, easy, cheap and sustainable way to travel! If you’re travelling to the festival by car, sign up to Liftshare to offer your empty seats and contribute to achieving sustainability!

Energy generation is one of the biggest sources of carbon dioxide emissions globally and in the UK.
Almost all of our stage and festoon lights are LED. LED lights are 95% more environmental friendly than fluorescent and incandescent lights. 95% of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat, however fluorescent lights convert 95% of energy to heat and only 5% into light. Much of our energy at the Festival is generated from solar power, any surplus energy created goes back to the grid.
Travelling to the festival makes up 80% of the total carbon emissions generated at a festival (source: The Show Must Go On Report, 2015). You could travel by lower carbon forms of travel such as coach, train with direct shuttle buses to the festival or carshare to help reduce this. See our transport page for all options.
We plan to partner with Big Green Coach as the official travel provider to Secret Sessions Festival 2021. Travelling by coach uses less carbon than travelling by car.
Coach travel is between 4 to 6 times more environmentally friendly than taking a car to a festival.
Using Big Green Coach is a positive step towards reducing the environmental impact caused by festival travel. Secret Sessions Festival will be super proud to work with Big Green Coach as the Official Coach Partner this year. Big Green Coach are the UK’s largest travel events company and will be providing coach services for weekend campers, alongside day return services.
They will be offering the chance to buy low cost return coach services, with or without your festival ticket as a package. Festival goers can choose to arrive on Wednesday,Thursday or Friday and Big Green Coach will get all campers home on Monday.
Day services are timed to arrive before music starts and will not depart until music finishes. With 18 pick-up points available across the UK, prices start from just £35 return.
Visit the Big Green Coach website for more information and to book your ticket and travel.
We run a three-bin system at the festival, which means every bin station in the campsite and main arena will be formed by 3 bins:
When you buy food from the traders, everything your food comes in is compostable so all plates, cutlery and napkins can be placed in the compost bins along with the food scraps. Please make sure NO PLASTIC goes into the compost.
Plastic bottles, aluminium cans, newspapers, magazines and clean and dry cardboard (no used greasy pizza boxes as these do not recycle).
3) GENERAL WASTE
There should be minimal left over that goes into General Waste.
CLEAN-UP NIFTY BIN
NiftyBins are back to have more fun with ZeroWaste recycling. Thank you in advance to everyone that takes the time to separate their waste. Please join us in helping clean up our own environment, we will have many recycling points across the festival, please spread the word of separation education and camp in a cleaner field each year. Your support is greatly welcome, it’s time now to make the change to help the future children enjoy a cleaner world.
When packing ready for the festival, remember to pack wisely and only bring essential items, please do not bring any single use plastic (plastic bottles are allowed but please keep them to a minimum). Thank you for taking your owned tents home with you.
If you want to hire a tent rather than bring your own, we offer pre pitched tents.
If you have any broken tents chairs, gazebos, empty batteries, unopened tins of food after the festival, please take them to the Recycling Points. If you need help with large items, please let us know and we will try to support you.
EVERY CAN COUNTS
We’ve teamed up with Every Can Counts this year who will gladly give your finished drink cans a new home. Expect games and activities, who knew recycling could be this much fun!
Tap water is free. Please feel free to refill your bottles at the taps provided.
Secret Sessions festival plan to use reusable cups, to help eliminate single-use plastic at festivals.
Pay £2 deposit on your first beer and get it back when you return the cup at the end of the night or at the end of the festival (before Sunday night) to our main bars.
Our creative team have designed a limited number of exclusive Secret Sessions Festival branded cups. Hopefully there will be a few designs to choose from for you to pick and keep as a festival souvenir.
